If you are a middle aged person like me you probably remember the days when you had only three to four channels to select from on your TV dial. All major networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, and maybe a PBS station. Whenever the President made a speech all three channels were preempted because of it. If you were lucky, you may have had one independent channel in your area that carried some old classic movies and TV shows.
Now with cable TV and satellite technology we have so many channels to select from it has become downright ridiculous. More and more broadcast stations have popped up over the years also. Not to mention we got VCRs to watch movies, then DVD. We also can use our television sets to play video games. Now comes digital broadcast television. Not only does the new technology give you excellent pictures on your local stations, it gives the stations the power of multi-casting.
What is multi-casting? Multi-casting is a method where one broadcast station can send multiple channels of programing through their single transmitter. For instance say you have a channel 2 in your area. That station will be 2-1 on your digital TV tuner. Now channel 2 can broadcast a channel 2-2 and 2-3 and offer different programing on each channel.
Many digital television stations are already utilizing that technology. Nearly all digital PBS stations offer multi-casting. They transmit the main PBS feed on their first channel and offer such programing as PBS Kids, Create, and other educational programing on other sub-channels. ION network offers, Qubo, and ION Life along with their broadcasting stations. Many major network stations are offering a 24/7 local weather channel along with their main broadcast.
In smaller markets where there are not as many stations main network stations use this to offer there viewers networks like CW and MyNetwork. This gives a small market the same variety of a large city market. Imagine living in a small rural area and being able to receive 15 stations or more just with an antenna.
Studies are beginning to show that some people who have already switched to the new digital technology are so pleased with the variety and clarity of there local programing they have canceled there satellite or cable service. This saves them money and eliminates a monthly bill.
Although this digital transition may seem like a big headache to most people, the end results will be astounding. If you buy a new TV or have purchased on in the last few years you are good to go. If you have an older set and do not want to spend the money for a new one, all you will need to do is invest in an inexpensive converter box*. They are as easy to hook up as an old VCR player and will turn your TV into an entertainment wonderland.
